Softball Captures Game One, Splits Twinbill With Lander

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team used a grand slam in the fifth inning of game one to fuel a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split with Lander on Saturday afternoon. The Braves won game one, 6-3, but fell 9-1 in game two of the twinbill.
 
The victory in the front end of the doubleheader snapped a four-game losing streak for the Braves (14-20, 3-7 PBC) in the series with Lander. The Bearcats (18-18, 3-7) have now split three of their last four league twinbills.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Kelli McCormack started the afternoon with a leadoff single and stole second to move herself into scoring position. Brianna Surrento drew a five-pitch walk, and Chandler Carey followed with a RBI single to plate the first run of the day. 
TOP 2 Delaney Guerrero and Morgan Watson each reached on singles, and Kelli McCormack knocked a one-out RBI single to left field that stretched the lead out to a pair of runs.
BOT 3 Mary Sells got the offense started with a two-out double. Jessica Auld reached via a hit by pitch and Jordan Adcox smacked the first run in moments later with a single to the gap in right field. Alex Watkins turned in front of an inside pitch to load the bases, and Cameron Davis cleared the bases with a grand slam that put the Braves on top, 5-2.
TOP 4 Morgan Watson doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a single to left field by Jace Bennefield. Kelli McCormack singled up the middle to cut the deficit back to two runs, 5-3.
BOT 6 Kaitlynn Norton and Lauren Hilbourn both singled to start the inning. A sac fly to deep centerfield from Rendi Wetherington plated an insurance run for the Braves. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Bridgett Tierney drew a five-pitch walk and scored on a two-out double down the left field line by Chandler Carey. 
TOP 3 Kelli McCormack (double) and Bridgett Tierney (single) each pounded hits to start off the frame, and McCormack eventually scored on a sac fly to center field by Brianna Surrento. 
TOP 4 Delaney Guerrero beat the throw for an infield single, and eventually scored on a throwing error on a steal attempt.
BOT 4 Cameron Davis doubled to left field and scored the only run of the game on a single up the middle from Alex Watkins. 
TOP 5 The Bearcats loaded the bases with their first four at-bats, and took a 4-1 advantage on a RBI single from Chandler Carey. Two-run knocks from Delaney Guerrero (double) and Morgan Watson (single) made it an 8-1 contest. 
TOP 6 Kelli McCormack singled up the middle, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. A long sac fly from Brianna Surrento scored McCormack for the final run of the game.

The Braves will be back in action at home again on Sunday when they take on Flagler (24-17, 7-3 PBC) on Senior Day at the UNCP Softball Field. The first pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. Bark In The Park will return to the UNCP Softball Field on Sunday as well.
