Softball Topples Flagler In Game One, Drops Game Two In Extras

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team combined for 24 hits, including 10 of the extra-base variety, on the way to a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split with Flagler on Sunday afternoon. The Braves won game one, 4-2, but fell in extra innings, 13-11, in game two of the twinbill. 
 
The victory in the front end of the doubleheader snapped a four-game losing streak for the Braves (15-21, 4-8 PBC) in the series with Flagler. The Saints (25-18, 8-4 PBC) have now split four out of their last five twinbills.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Jordan Adcox led off the inning started with a single, and Alex Watkins followed minutes later with a one-out single of her own. A standup double from Kaitlynn Norton with the next at-bat put the Braves on top early, 2-0. 
BOT 4 Cameron Davis lit up the scoreboard with a solo homerun to left field. 
BOT 5 Chloe' Radford led off the frame with a double to left field and Rendi Wetherington continued the momentum with a single to centerfield that moved Radford to third. Mary Sells reached on a fielder's choice that pushed Radford across with the 4-0 lead. 
TOP 6 The first three batters for Flagler all reached base safely, include a RBI single from Morgan Murphy that gave Flagler its first run. Megan Miller knocked in the only other run for the Saints on a RBI groundout.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Back-to-back one-out doubles by Genevieve Mangini and Tatum Morgan plated the first run of the game for Flagler. Natlie Murphy continued the offensive surge with a two-out RBI single two batters later. 
BOT 1 Rendi Wetherington, Mary Sells and Jordan Adcox all singled, and Cameron Davis cleared the bases with a grand slam. 
TOP 2 The Saints put runners at first and second after a walk and an error in the field, and Tatum Morgan smacked a RBI single to left field to cut Flagler's deficit to just one run.
BOT 2 Rendi Wetherington doubled to the gap in left field and scored on a single from Mary Sells to pad the lead for the hosts back to two runs, 5-3.
BOT 3 Cameron Davis (single) and Alex Watkins (double) kept the offense rolling, and Tatum Brummitt knocked in both runs with a double to right field. A RBI single from Kaitlynn Norton and a RBI groundout by Chloe' Radford capped off the four-run frame.
TOP 4 Garland Evans drew a four-pitch walk, and Tatum Morgan sent one out of the park to keep the Saints within striking distance. 
TOP 5 Anna Dumovich cut into Flagler's deficit again, this time with a one-out solo homer. 
BOT 5 Lauren Hilbourn drew a walk to start the inning and scored on a double to centerfield from Mary Sells. Jordan Adcox smoked a single down the right field line with the next at-bat to plate Sells with the 11-6 advantage for the hosts.
TOP 6 The first five Saints all reached base safely in the sixth, and Flagler scored five times in the frame to pull to within one run, 11-10. 
BOT 7 Flagler loaded the bases with its first four at-bats, including three walks, and a one-out sac fly from Natalie Morgan was all the Saints needed to knot the score up and send the game into extra innings. 
TOP 9 Garland Evans and Genevieve Mangini each reached via singles to start the inning. Maria Kappos singled to left field to score Evans, and a sac fly from Natalie Murphy gave Flagler an insurance run.
