Softball Continues Surge, Sweeps Winston-Salem State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team tacked 11 hits and registered a trio of multi-run innings to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Winston-Salem State with an 11-3 mercy-rule victory in the second half of a Wednesday doubleheader in Pembroke. The Braves took the first game of the twinbill, 6-3.
 
The sweep marked the seventh and eighth wins in the last 10 outings for the Braves (17-21) who wrapped up a scheduled 10-game home stand as well. The Rams (24-8) have now dropped four-straight outings.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3 Tatum Brummitt got the offense rolling with a double down the left field line and scored when Alyssa Price reached on a costly error. Mary Sells (fielder's choice), Jordan Adcox (single) and Alex Watkins (single) all picked up RBI to add to the four-run frame. 
BOT 4 Rendi Wetherington singled to centerfield, stole second base and scored on a single from Mary Sells. A fielder's choice ball from Cameron Davis allowed Sells to scamper home and put the Braves up 6-0.  
TOP 5 The Rams loaded the bases with their first four at-bats, and Alleigh Himes drew a two-out walk to force in a run. An ill-timed wild pitch allowed the second run to cross the plate and cut the deficit for WSSU back to four runs.  
TOP 7 Destiny Snipes smacked a doubled down the left field line and scored on a single to center field from Erica Davis. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 1 Rendi Wetherington singled to center field and stood on third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Cameron Davis singled to centerfield to put the Braves on the board, and Alex Watkins laid down a sac bunt moments later to score Mary Sells from third base. 
BOT 3 Rendi Wetherington drew a walk and scored on a Jordan Addox single to center field. Cameron Davis cleared the bases with a two-run bomb to center field that put UNCP up by six runs.
TOP 6 Erica Davis reached on an error and scored on a double to left field from Alleigh Himes. Kourtney Thomas reached on a throwing error, and Aniyah Jones smacked a two-run single to centerfield to cut the Rams deficit back 6-3. 
BOT 6 Alyssa Price smacked a double to start the frame and eventually scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Jordan Adcox. Cameron Davis made it an 8-3 game on a RBI single, and Alex Watkins ended the game in grand fashion with a three-run dinger down the left field line to invoke the run-rule.
