Softball Steals Game One In Extras, Splits Twinbill With Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke softball team used a suicide squeeze in the 9thinning to slip by Georgia Southwestern in the opener, 1-0, but the Hurricanes rallied for three late runs in regulation, and then used a 1-out RBI single in the 10thto forge a doubleheader split with the Braves on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Braves (18-22, 5-9 PBC) picked up their first extra-inning victory of the season in the opener of the doubleheader, and have now split each of their last three Peach Belt Conference series to keep themselves in the hunt for a PBC Tournament berth. The Hurricanes (25-21, 9-7 PBC) have split each of their last three league doubleheaders as well.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 9 Cameron Davis singled to lead off the ninth, and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Alex Watkins. Kaitlynn Norton advanced Davis on a single through the right side, and Tatum Brummitt laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to plate the only run of the game.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 5 Rendi Wetherington cranked a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a sac bunt. An ill-timed passed ball allowed Wetherington to score and pad UNCP's lead out to three runs, 4-1. 
BOT 6 Lauren Kuerzi reached on an ill-timed error, and moved into scoring position on Kayla Kerr's single. Sarah Beth King singled to centerfield to score one, and Aimee Oglesby singled down the left field line to cap off the two-run inning.
BOT 7 Chloe Zoeller drew a walk to lead off the home half of the seventh, and moved her way around to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a one-out single by Hayley Tierce. Lauren Kuerzi's one-out sacrifice fly sent the game into extra frames. 
TOP 10 Rendi Wetherington climbed aboard via a one-out single and stole second moments later to put herself into scoring position. Cameron Davis singled to centerfield two batters later to put the Braves on top again, 5-4. 
BOT 10 Kayla Kerr and Sarah Beth King both singles to lead off the 10thand moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Aimee Oglesby. The Hurricanes used a suicide squeeze to even things back up, and then brought across the winning run on a bases-loaded single from Chloe Zoeller.

UP NEXT
The Braves will be back at home on Tuesday to take on Francis Marion (28-17, 7-9 PBC) at the UNCP Softball Field for I-Scream For Softball Day. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3 p.m. UNCP's doubleheader at Columbus State which was originally scheduled for Sunday has been moved to April 26 at 1 p.m.
