Ninth-Inning Rally Helps Baseball Even Series At USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke baseball team broke open a tie ballgame with four runs in the top of the ninth, and then held off a furious rally by USC Aiken in the bottom of the frame, to even up their weekend series with the Pacers with a 10-6 victory on Saturday at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The win quelled a three-game losing streak for the Braves (16-16, 6-11 PBC) who stopped a two-game skid in the series with USC Aiken as well. The Pacers (18-14, 10-7) have now dropped five of their last seven contests.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Trevor Clemons (single) and River Ryan (walk) both reached base to lead off the game for the Braves, and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. That set the table for a two-run single from Ethan Baucom that gave the visitors the early lead.
TOP 4 Luke Jackson singled to lead off the fourth, and eventually moved to third base on a stolen base and a single by Elijah Helton. Jarratt Mobley's one-out sacrifice fly stretched UNCP's advantage out to 4-0.
BOT 4 Luke Leisenring got the Pacers on the board when he hit a 1-and-1 offering from UNCP starter Tanner Routh out of the ballpark.
TOP 5 Trevor Clemons and River Ryan each hit doubles to lead off the fifth and push the lead back out to four runs. The Braves executed a successful double steal attempt to make it a 5-1 game, and then got a RBI single from Elijah Helton to go out in front 6-1.
BOT 5 Chandler Rogers and Conner Durden both drew full-count walks to get something going for the Pacers in the home half of the inning, but it was an error that brought across the first of three runs for the hosts. Trey Polewski and Philip Watcher hit two-out RBI singles to finish off the frame.
BOT 7 Trey Polewski (walk) and Cary Holloway were both issued free passes with two outs showing, and Luke Bottomley brought both runners home with his at-bat, including a costly error by the Braves that yielded the game-tying score.
TOP 9 The Braves loaded the bases with their first four at-bats, and scored the go-ahead run on a costly passed ball by the hosts. Elijah Helton's two-run single moments later pushed the lead out to 9-6, and the Braves padded their advantage out to four runs on a two-out RBI single from Jarratt Mobley.
BOT 9 UNCP reliever Brandon Winstead needed just one pitch to record the first out of the frame, but issued free passes to each of the next three Pacers to juice the bases. Winstead composed himself in time, however, striking out Luke Bottomley and then inducing a game-ending fly out from the bat of Jackson Hannon.
