Ball Leads Baseball To Win Over No. 3 Columbus State

BREAKING: Game two of the series has been moved up to accommodate rain in the forecast. Saturday's game is now scheduled for a noon first pitch.

PEMBROKE
– The UNC Pembroke baseball team pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to help support a complete-game outing from senior Nile Ball and help the Braves cruise to an 8-1 victory over Peach Belt Conference-leading and third-ranked Columbus State on Friday at Sammy Cox Field.

The result marked the second-straight league victory for the Braves (9-10, 3-7 PBC) who moved to 2-0 this season when facing a returning all-American pitcher. The setback snapped a 10-game win streak for the Cougars (12-5, 3-1 PBC) whose last loss came in the series finale at Embry-Riddle nearly a month ago (February 9).

KEY INNINGS
BOT 4 Elijah Helton got things started for the Braves by crushing Kolton Ingram's first offering of the frame over the fence in left field. River Ryan and Jarratt Mobley both followed with singles to set the table for Bobby Dixon's RBI double that stretched the lead out to a pair of runs. Luke Jackson's sacrifice fly to deep centerfield capped off the frame.
BOT 5 Connor Grainger and Elijah Helton led off the frame with singles, and River Ryan laced a one-out RBI single up the middle that brought the run home from third base.
TOP 6 Nile Ball sat down the first two batters he faced on just two pitches, but Dane Bullock spoiled the shutout moments later when he sent a 1-and-1 offering from the UNCP right-hander over the wall in left field.
BOT 6 The Braves loaded the bases with their first four at-bats in the home half of the sixth to set the table for a two-runs single from Ethan Baucom that padded the lead out to 6-1. Connor Grainger followed with a RBI double down the left field line, and Elijah Helton capped the scoring on the day with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
