No. 3 Columbus State Slips Past Baseball, Evens Series

PEMBROKE – Third-ranked Columbus State broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth, and then held off a promising charge by the UNC Pembroke baseball team in the home half of the frame, to key a series-tying 5-4 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
 
The setback snapped a two-game Peach Belt Conference win streak for the Braves (9-11, 3-8 PBC) who upended the nationally-ranked Cougars with an 8-1 win on Friday. The triumph snapped a three-game road losing streak for Columbus State (13-5, 4-1).

KEY INNINGS
BOT 3 The Braves put runners at the corners after a fielder's choice from Ethan Baucom in the home half of the third, and Connor Grainger gave the hosts the lead moments later on a two-strike RBI single through the left side that scored Luke Jackson from third.
BOT 4 CSU starter Jalen Latta needed just six pitches to record the first two outs in the fourth, but Bobby Dixon hammered a 1-and-1 offering in the next at-bat over the wall in right field.
TOP 6 The Cougars got their first two runners aboard in the sixth, and Frank Wager followed with a towering home run to right field to give the visitors their first lead of the series. Columbus State put each of its next two batters on base as well, but reliever Blake Helms slammed the door on the rally by registering three-straight outs.
BOT 8 Ethan Baucom knotted things back up on a solo homer with UNCP's first at-bat of the frame.
TOP 9 Matthew McDade reached via a single to right field to lead off the frame, and Garrett Kirkwood ripped a RBI double into right field to put the Cougars out front again. Frank Wager's one-out RBI single later in the frame pushed CSU's advantage out to 5-3.
BOT 9 Zach Ghelfi drew a full-count walk to lead off the home half of the frame, and UNCP put two aboard on a single from Trevor Clemons two at-bats later. Ethan Baucom laced a one-out RBI single into right field, and the Braves loaded the bases on a walk issued to Connor Grainger. The rally would come to an end, however, when CSU reliever Devin Dudal induced a game-ending double play ball off the bat of Elijah Helton.
