Softball Falls Twice At Columbus State, But Earns PBC Tournament Berth

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Freshman Cameron Davis hit a solo home run to give the UNC Pembroke softball team an early lead, but Columbus State rallied for three unanswered runs to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Braves on Friday afternoon. The Cougars registered a 10-2 win in six innings to open the twinbill.
 
Despite Friday's losses, the Braves (22-26, 7-13 PBC) still clinched the eighth and final berth into next weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Dahlonega, Ga., where they will take on top-seeded and fourth-ranked North Georgia. The Cougars (33-15, 13-5) opened up a regular season-ending four-game home stand with Friday's results.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Columbus State broke open an otherwise close game with five runs in the home half of the second inning, including three scores with two outs showing.
TOP 6 The Braves loaded the bases with their first three at-bats in the sixth, and spoiled the shutout by drawing a pair of one-out free passes that forced a pair of runs across the plate.
BOT 6 The Cougars got run-scoring at-bats from both Kirstin Reynolds and Paris Poston, and then used a two-out RBI single from Maddie Dodson to invoke the mercy rule.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Cameron Davis hammered a one-ball offering from Columbus State starter Hannah Rose Corbin to give the Braves their first lead of the day.
BOT 5 The Cougars pounded out four hits in a decisive three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good. Corbin helped her own cause with a go-ahead RBI double to the gap in right field.
