Georgia Southwestern Evens Series With Baseball

AMERICUS, Ga. – Home-standing Georgia Southwestern pounded out 16 hits and tacked up multiple runs in four different innings, but had to hold off a late-game rally by the UNC Pembroke baseball team to secure an 11-10 victory over the Braves in the second half of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday.

The setback, coupled with a victory by Lander earlier in the afternoon, mathematically eliminated the Braves (21-26, 11-18 PBC) from the race for the eighth and final spot in next weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The victory kept the Hurricanes (20-29, 13-16) in contention for the postseason berth.

KEY INNINGS

BOT 1 The Hurricanes led off the home half of the first with a single and a walk, and put both runners into scoring position on an ensuing passed ball.  Jason Baita scored on a wild pitch, and the hosts cut their deficit to just one run, 3-2, on a RBI groundout from Hunter Foster minutes later.
BOT 2 Georgia Southwestern used a leadoff double, an ensuing walk and a sacrifice bunt to put a pair of runners into scoring position again, and then knotted the score up at three apiece thanks to Jason Baita's RBI single.
BOT 3 The Hurricanes registered base hits in four of their first five at-bats in the home half of the third, and took the lead for good on Bo Halcomb's RBI double to right field. Bradley Hough's RBI double with the next at-bat stretched the advantage out to 6-3 heading to the fourth.
BOT 7 Tyler Skelton singled to lead off the seventh, and Jonathan Martin followed with a RBI triple with the ensuing at-bat. Martin would scamper home seconds later on a wild pitch that gave the hosts an 11-4 lead.
