Volleyball Falls To Valdosta State, Converse At USC Aiken Invite

AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team combined to register just a .095 hitting percent over eight combined sets on the day and were unable to shake off the effects of 55 hitting errors in losses to both Valdosta State (3-0) and Converse (3-2) at the USC Aiken Invitational on Friday.
 
The Braves (7-6) committed 27 hitting errors and hit at just a -.018 rate in the straight-sets loss to the Blazers (7-4) to open their portion of round-robin tournament play. The Black & Gold vastly improved its hitting percent (.151) in the five-set loss to the Valkyries (2-9), but a season-high 28 hitting errors proved to be the difference.

MATCH 1 REPLAY
The Blazers committed just four hitting errors in the opening set while holding the Braves to a .045 clip on the way to a 25-18 victory. Hitting percentages on both sides took a dip in the second set resulting in a closer score, but the Braves found themselves on the wrong end of a 25-20 decision. Valdosta State registered an impressive .345 hitting percentage in the third set, while the Braves hit at a -.167 clip. The Blazers completed the sweep with a 25-12 outcome in set three.

MATCH 2 REPLAY
UNC Pembroke captured the opening set of the night, but Converse combined to hit .230 at the net on the way to capturing each of the next two sets. Consecutive kills from Kaila Crowder helped the Braves knot things back up with a 26-24 triumph in the fourth set, but UNCP could not hold off Converse in the decisive fifth set.
 
A kill from Kaila Crowder gave the Black & Gold a 15-14 lead and a match-point opportunity, but the Valkyries knotted things back up moments later on a kill from Brittany Tepedino, took the lead on an attack error from the Braves, and prevailed 17-15 on another kill from Tepedino.

The Braves will close out play at the USC Aiken Invitational with two more matches on Saturday. UNCP will take on West Florida (5-5) at 10 a.m., before locking horns with Erskine (5-7) in a 12:30 p.m. matchup.
