Softball Seals Opening-Day Victory Over Kutztown, Game Two Suspended

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team put together nine hits, including three for extra bases, on the way to a 7-4 victory over the Kutztown Golden Bears on Friday as part of the UNCP Softball Invitational at the UNCP Softball Field.
 
Due to inclement weather, the two teams will pick up at the top of the 8th inning on Saturday with the International Tiebreaker Rule in effect tomorrow. A game time will be determined later this evening.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Rendi Wetherington tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and eventually scored on a Kaitlynn Norton single. Courtney Biddle walked to load the bases, and the hosts got back-to-back RBI at-bats from Carson Powell and Lauren Hillbourn to make it a 3-0 affair.
BOT 2 Rendi Wetherington singled to left field, stole second and scored on a double steal attempt to put the hosts in front by four runs, 4-0.
BOT 5 Rendi Wetherington singled in a run and Mary Sells drove in two more to extend the lead out to six runs, 7-1.
TOP 7 An ill-timed fielding error allowed Jenna Lipowski to reach first, and Alyssa Donato cleared the bases with a home run to center field. Raygan Larson came on to finish it out for the Braves, inducing a fly out from Taylor Knappenberger before striking out Gillian Walsh to end the game.
