Shepherd Slips By Baseball, Evens Series

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team's three-armed pitching staff combined to register a dozen strikeouts, but visiting Shepherd scraped across lone runs in four different frames to even up the weekend series with a 4-2 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
 
The Braves (1-1) mustered just four hits on the day, including two in the bottom of the ninth inning, to key the outcome. The triumph snapped an eight-game series losing streak for the Rams (1-1) who had not tasted victory against the Black & Gold since the 2017 campaign.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Dalton Stewart led off the day with a solo homer in the game's first at-bat to give Shepherd the early advantage.
BOT 1 UNCP put its first two batters of the frame aboard, and eventually knotted things back up on a RBI groundout from the bat of Bobby Dixon.
TOP 2 Shepherd got back-to-back one-out singles from Joe Burack and Easy Goita, and then took the lead for good on Trent Burgreen's RBI single moments later.
BOT 9 Newcomer Gage Hammonds finally woke the bats for the hosts when he drove Eric O'Brien's one-ball offering over the fence in right field. The Braves got a two-out single from Jarratt Mobley later in the frame, but could not scrape across any more runs.
