Catawba Uses Timely Hitting To Sweep Softball

PEMBROKE – Visiting Catawba pounded out a combined 21 hits, including 13 in the back half of the twinbill, with the to secure a non-conference sweep of the UNC Pembroke softball team on Sunday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field. The Indians captured game one, 3-1, and then completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in game two.
 
The outcomes stretched the losing streak for UNCP (4-8) out to six games, including the last four outings at home. The Indians (6-2) improved to 6-0 against Peach Belt Conference teams this season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Kaylee Cook drew a leadoff walk and scored on a single from Riley Tucker to centerfield.
TOP 2 Taylor Martin drew a walk and advanced to second on an ill-timed wild pitch. Carlee Brawley reached on an error from the second baseman that also allowed Martin to score.
BOT 3 Rendi Wetherington singled to right field and advanced all the way around to third on consecutive groundouts. Jordan Adcox eventually legged out an infield single that brought Wetherington home from third.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Jordan Dean singled to right field, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kayla Pedersen's RBI groundout allowed Dean to score.
BOT 2 Tatum Brummitt singled to left field and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Brummitt advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Adcox and came scurrying home on a sacrifice bunt from Alex Watkins that knotted the game at 1-1.
BOT 3 Rendi Wetherington singled to right field and stole both second and third base. An RBI double from Mary Sells minutes later put the Braves ahead for the first time, 2-1.
TOP 4 Catawba put runners on the corners, and Kayla Pederson singled to center field to knot the score at 2 apiece. A sac fly to centerfield and a single to left field capped off the three-run inning that put the Indians ahead for good.

The Braves will make the short trip up U.S. 74 to take on Wingate (6-4) on Tuesday. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Wingate Softball Complex.
