Softball Snaps Skid, Sweeps West Virginia Tech

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team pounded out seven extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs, to help fuel a non-conference sweep of visiting West Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves captured game one of the twinbill, 8-0 in five innings, and then completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two.
 
The results snapped a six-game skid for UNCP (6-8) who tasted victory for the first time since a 3-1 win over Chowan on February 4. The Golden Bears (2-6) have now been victimized by doubleheader sweeps three times this season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 UNC Pembroke loaded the bases with its first three at-bats of the frame before back-to-back sacrifice flies from Emily Biddle and Carson Powell gave the Braves a lead they would not relinquish. to the outfield from Emily Biddle and Carson Powell plated the first two runs.
TOP 5 Mackenzie Siersma laced a single to shallow left field to lead off the first and break up Malerie Leviner's bid for a no-hitter.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 Jordan Adcox drew a walk to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Kaitlynn Norton. Emily Biddle smacked a single down the leftfield line to score Adcox and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
TOP 5 Nicole Kester reached via hit by a pitch to begin the fifth, and a RBI double from Jacey Bertalan in the next at-bat knotted the game up at one run apiece.
BOT 6 Emily Biddle (double) and Carson Powell (single) both reached safely to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Rendi Wetherington's double to left field moved UNCP ahead for good. Wetherington stole third and scored on the throw down to provide the final.
