Softball Drops Two Games At Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry pounded out 23 hits and scored 22 times across the twinbill, while also limiting the UNC Pembroke softball team to a 3-for-17 clip with runners in scoring position, to key a doubleheader sweep of the Braves on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center Complex. Newberry took game one, 10-2 in six innings, and captured the nightcap 12-6.
 
It was the fourth-straight series loss for the Braves (4-4) who have also lost nine-straight road games to the Wolves as well. Newberry (4-0) stayed unbeaten on the young season with the result, and now leads the all-time series, 19-8.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Newberry loaded the bases with two outs, and Julia Bomhardt doubled down the left field line to plate the first two runs of the game.
BOT 4 Morgan Wagaman singled, but Mallena Wright lit up the scoreboard with a homer over the left center field fence to put the hosts up 4-0. 
TOP 5 Rendi Wetherington (single) and Mary Sells (single) each advanced 60 feet on a long flyout from Jordan Adcox, and Tatum Brummitt singled up the middle moments later to plate both runners.
BOT 6 Morgan Wagaman singled to the gap in leftfield and scored on a triple from Mallena Wright. McKenzie Barneycastle legged out a bunt single and an ill-timed throwing error from the Braves allowed Wright to score. Newberry capped the run-rule victory with a single up the middle from Haley Simonds.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 1 McKenzie Barneycastle singled and later scored on a single from Tedi Nunn. Hannah Davis's double to rightfield added two more runs to the scoreboard. Mallena Wright singled to centerfield  later in the frame to plate two runs that highlighted Newberry's six-run inning.
BOT 3 Newberry loaded the bases for Kylee Barry who singled up the middle to tack on two more runs. Tedi Nunn and Julia Bomhardt both provided RBI as well to stretch the lead out to 10-0.
TOP 4 Lauren Hilbourn beat out an infield single, and Rendi Wetherington lit up the scoreboard for the Braves with a home run to center field.
TOP 5 Tatum Brummitt reached on an error and eventually scored on a costly wild pitch. Lauren Hilbourn plated Emily Biddle on a single later in the frame to make it a six-run game, 10-4.
TOP 6 Mary Sells (single) and Jordan Adcox (walk) both reached base safely to get something going again for the Braves. Kaitlynn Norton's single would bring both runners scurrying home and get the visitors to within four runs, 10-6.

The Braves will return home on Tuesday when they welcome Fayetteville State (1-1) to Pembroke for a doubleheader at the UNCP Softball Field. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3 p.m. Admission is free to all home UNCP softball games.
