NEWBERRY, S.C. –
Anthony Carter registered three victories before falling in the championship bout of the 125-pound tournament, while
Jovaun Johnson (184) and
Marcus Bell (197) finished third and fifth, respectively, to highlight action for the UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Sunday afternoon at the Newberry Open.
Six of UNCP's seven student-athletes competing in the tournament registered at least one victory on Sunday, including Johnson who rebounded from a setback in his opening match of the day to string together four wins in the consolation tournament. Bell suffered a loss in his opening match of the day as well, but tallied two pins in the consolation bracket at 197 pounds and ultimately came out on top in the fifth-place matchup.
The Braves will close out the home portion of their 2019-20 regular season schedule on Tuesday evening when they welcome Spartanburg Methodist to Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Wrestling action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
