Defense Reigns As Soccer Blanks Visiting Wingate

October 20, 2021

Box Score PEMBROKE – Naomi Fountain's 15th minute goal was more than enough offense for the red-hot UNC Pembroke soccer team as the Braves rode an unrelenting defensive effort to a 1-0 win over visiting Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

The victory snapped a six-game series winless streak for the Braves (11-3-0) who picked up their first win over Wingate since 2008, and also tacked up their 10th-straight win of the season in the process as well. The setback snapped a five-game win streak for the Bulldogs (7-5-0) who had shut out each of their last two opponents as well.

SCORING SUMMARY
15' Ashleigh Harris sliced through a pair of defenders and served a ball into the penalty area to the waiting feet of Naomi Fountain who chipped a ball past goalkeeper Katrine Thisgaard.

NOTABLES

+ UNCP's 10-game win streak is the longest for the program since the 2008 squad strung together 11-straight wins from October 1 to November 7. The 2008 team holds the program record for longest win streak, but the 2016 squad registered a program-best 12-game unbeaten streak from September 14 to October 26.
+ The Braves have outscored opponents, 40-5, over the last 10 outings, including six shutout victories. UNCP has out-shot its opponents over the same span by an average of 25.5 to 7.5.
+ The Black & Gold snapped a six-game series winless streak with Wednesday's triumph over the Bulldogs. UNCP's last victory in the series came during the 2008 campaign, although the Braves registered a draw with their U.S. 74 rival in both 2010 and 2014.

UP NEXT
The Braves will continue a four-game home stand on Saturday when they suit up to battle Conference Carolinas rival Southern Wesleyan (2-10-1, 2-7-0 CC) at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon and admission is free.
