Newberry Battles Back To Stymie Volleyball

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team rallied back from a 20-18 deficit to take the opening set, but Newberry played the role of an ungracious host and captured each of the next three sets to deal the Braves a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 16-25, 25-27) loss on Tuesday evening in Eleazer Arena.

The result snapped a three-match win streak for the Black & Gold (19-9) who has now dropped three of its last five road outings. The victory put an end to a two-match skid for the Wolves (10-10) who avenged a sweep at the hands of the Braves earlier this season in Pembroke.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-22 The Wolves won three points over a four-rally span to take a late 20-18 advantage, but UNCP rallied to knot the game at 21 points apiece, and then tacked up the last four points to grab the early advantage. The Braves hit .389 at the net and tallied 22 kills in the stanza, while committing just a trio of attack errors.
SET 2 I 19-25 Newberry was near flawless at the net in grabbing the second set, totaling 18 kills and hitting .364 to even up the tilt. The Wolves led 7-3 in the early going, but the visitors eventually rallied to knot the set up at 12 points apiece before the tables turned again. The Wolves used a run of three-straight points to take the lead for good, and then strung together five-straight points minutes later to fuel the outcome.
SET 3 I 16-25 UNCP mustered just eight kills in the third set as Newberry continued its hot hand to swing the momentum for good. The Braves overcame a 13-8 deficit to inevitably even up the set at 15 points a side, but the Wolves raked in 10 of the set's final 11 points to deliver the big blow.
SET 4 I 25-27 Neither side was able to exert any dominance in what would turn out to be the final set of the evening, although UNCP did hold a 14-9 lead following an attack error by the hosts. Newberry would claw its way back into the stanza, however, using a late run of three-straight points to set up its first set point opportunity. The Braves took a 25-24 lead on Elise Martin's service ace, but Newberry scored the last three points of the night, including the last two via service ace.
