Volleyball Splits Saturday Home Double Dip

October 9, 2021

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit an impressive .337 at the net on the way to staking claim to the longest home win streak in their NCAA Division II history with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-17) triumph over Southern Wesleyan the opener of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, but had their record win streak snapped with a 3-1 (17-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21) loss to Flagler in the nightcap at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

UNCP (16-7, 8-1 CC) logged its seventh-straight home win with the triumph over the Warriors (1-10, 0-7) to give UNCP its longest win streak in the 30-year NCAA Division II history of the program. The run of success is one game better than the 1992 squad – UNCP's first as an NCAA Division II affiliate – who finished its campaign with a 22-5 clip and a runner-up finish in the then-Peach Belt Athletic Conference.

The Braves saw their four-match season win streak snapped in the evening matchup with Peach Belt Conference-leading Flagler (12-3). The four-set win is the seventh-straight victory for the Saints.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-9 The Braves committed just one attack error in the opening set and wasted little time in climbing all over the visiting Warriors. UNCP built a 13-3 advantage before surrendering consecutive points to Southern Wesleyan, but raked in seven of the next eight points after that to pad their lead out to 20-6. UNCP closed out the set with five-straight points to take control early.
SET 2 I 25-10 Little went wrong for UNCP in the second set, as the Braves hit .652 at the net and tallied 16 kills on the way taking complete control of the Conference Carolinas matchup. The squads went tit-for-tat for much of the first 10 points of action, but the Black & Gold put together a 10-2 run after that to signal the final outcome.
SET 3 I 25-17 UNCP fought off eight attack errors in the final set to finish off the team victory. The Braves posted the first eight points of what would turn out to be the final set of the match, and led 10-1 following a service ace from Elise Martin. The Warriors used a 7-1 run to pull to within six points, 18-12, but the hosts regained their footing after that to finish it out.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 17-25 Flagler hit .379 at the net and posted 14 kills en route to capturing the opening set of the nightcap. The Saints scored nine-straight points to forge an early 12-4 advantage, and led 21-10 following a kill from Rebekah Machovec. UNCP tacked up five-straight points in attempt to put together a late comeback, but the Saints raked in three of the last four points to close it out.
SET 2 I 18-25 The Braves could not overcome a dozen attack errors in the second set as the visitors won set No. 2 to take control of the match. UNCP had control early when it took a 14-8 lead on a bad set by the Saints, but Flagler hung around and eventually closed out the set with an 11-1 run.
SET 3 I 25-18 UNCP scored points in bunches to get on the board with a big win in the third set. Flagler took a 9-8 advantage on a kill from the hands of Rachel Machovec, but the Black & Gold scored six-straight points after that to take the lead for good. The Saints pulled to within three points, 18-15, on another kill by Machovec, but that preceded another run by the Braves – this time a 5-1 run – that carried them through.
SET 4 I 21-25 A competitive fourth set ultimately swung to Flagler's side, but the Saints had to hold on late to put the wraps on the team win. Flagler used a kill from Molly Boyd to pad its advantage out to 21-14, but the Braves had one last surge in them. The hosts scored seven of the next 10 points to pull to within three, 24-21, but the Saints used a kill from Victoria Bowrosen to ice the match.
