Shaffer Captures Title At Georgia Open, Vereen 2nd

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Newcomer Zach Shaffer completed a unblemished run through the 285-pound tournament with a 5-3 decision in the championship match, while Rahsaan Vereen had his title hopes tripped up with a tough loss in the finals of the 165-pound tournament, to highlight action for the 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Sunday at the Georgia Open.
 
The Braves, who split their squad on Sunday to compete at the NC State club-hosted Wolfpack Open as well, sent four wrestlers to the podium at the Georgia Open in total, including third-place finishers Anthony Carter (133 pounds) and Caleb Grau (174).
 
Shaffer, a transfer from Ferrum, registered shutouts in each of his first two bouts of the day, and pinned Lander's Cameron Coffman in 49 seconds in the semifinal match to highlight his run of success. Vereen was dominant in his first three matches of the day, but his run was quelled via a 3-0 decision at the hands of Cumberland's Cole Smith.
 
 Eighteen of UNCP's 25 entries into the event registered at least one victory on the day, with 14 of those student-athletes posting two or more wins. Shaffer tallied a team-best five wins, while Joey Perez (149 pounds), Carter and Grau (174) raked in four wins.
 
The Braves will open up the dual meet portion of their 2021-22 schedule on Thursday when they suit up to battle South Atlantic Conference Carolinas foe Lincoln Memorial at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. and admission is free.
