Men’s Basketball Cracks Century Mark, Rattles Erskine

PEMBROKE – Senior Spencer Levi turned in 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead a parade of six players with double-figure scoring numbers for the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team, and the Braves used 57 percent field goal shooting to cruise past visiting Erskine, 110-73, on Saturday afternoon in the Conference Carolinas opener for both sides.

The Braves (4-0, 1-0 CC) registered 51 points in the paint and finished the game with a dominant 53-24 performance on the boards, but also finished Saturday's outing with 36 fastbreak points and recorded 40 percent shooting (8-for-20) from the perimeter. The setback kept Erskine (0-3, 0-1) winless on the 2021-22 campaign, and marked the fourth-straight loss for the Flying Fleet dating back to the abbreviated spring season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
A nip-and-tuck affair for much of the first five minutes of the afternoon, the Braves used a fastbreak layup from Spencer Levi at the 14:15 mark to ignite a 16-2 run over the next four minutes that eventually padded UNCP's lead out to 25-10. Spencer Levi's bucked in the paint pushed UNCP's lead out to 22 points, and the hosts inevitably toted a 48-31 advantage into the intermission.
2ND HALF
The Braves connected on better than 61 percent of their shots in the second half and led by as many as 37 points, 93-56, following a 3-pointer from freshman Nygell Verdier with 5:54 left in the game. Newcomer Jakari Gallon pushed the Black & Gold to the century mark with a pair of free throws with 2:57 remaining.

NOTABLES
+ UNCP's 37-point win on Saturday was its largest margin of victory since a 94-56 home win over then-Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta on Jan. 15, 2020. It was the first 100-point game for the Braves since a 109-89 win over USC Aiken in Pembroke on Feb. 19, 2020.
+ The Braves posted a 29-board advantage in the rebounding column on Saturday. It is their largest rebounding margin since out-rebounding Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in the 2013-14 season opener (Nov. 7, 2013). The Black & Gold has now out-rebounded its last 16 opponents, including 10 by double digits.
+ The Black & Gold has now captured five of its last six conference openers and improved to 15-15 in such contests since joining the NCAA Division II ranks prior to the 1992-93 season.
UP NEXT
UNCP will open up a short two-game road trip on Tuesday when it makes the long trek to Franklin Springs, Ga., to battle Conference Carolinas preseason favorite Emmanuel (2-1, 1-0 CC) in the second game of a 7 p.m. doubleheader inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
