No. 19 Wrestling Places Seven At Life U Open

MARIETTA, Ga. – Rahsaan Vereen (165 pounds) and Zach Shaffer (285) both registered sixth-place finishes, while five of their teammates placed among the top 5 in their respective freshman/sophomore tournaments, to highlight action for the 19th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team on Saturday at the Life U Open.
 
Vereen captured a trio of victories in the 165-pound tournament before bowing out via medical forfeit in the tournament's fifth place matchup. Shaffer logged four victories in the heavyweight bracket, but he too was forced to withdraw from the tournament after qualifying for the fifth place bout.
 
Caleb Grau registered a third-place finish in the 174-pound freshman/sophomore tournament, while Christopher Dickey placed fourth in the 184-pound freshman/sophomore tournament. Grant Kahlenberg (141 pounds), Christopher Dickey (184) and Garrett Steele (197) all reached the fifth-place bout in their respective freshman/sophomore tournament as well.
 
Twenty-one UNCP wrestlers tallied at least one victory on the day, including 15 that logged multiple wins. Dickey, Shaffer and Patrick Werve all turned in a team-best four triumphs on the day.
 
The Braves will get a two-week break from competition before resuming their 2021-22 schedule on December 4 at the Lander-hosted The Carolina Clash inside LU's Horne Arena.
