Volleyball Tops Lees-McRae In Four Sets

PEMBROKE – Juniors Shannon Skryd and Brianna Warren each logged a match-best 11 kills, and the UNC Pembroke volleyball team ran its win streak out to three matches with a 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-11, 26-24) victory over Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
It was the sixth win in the last seven matches for the Braves (22-9, 14-2 CC) who have now captured four-straight outings at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court as well. The Bobcats (9-15, 7-10) have now dropped four of their last five contests, and fell to 4-12 away from Banner Elk with Saturday's defeat.
 
The win set up a gigantic Wednesday home matchup for the Braves with I-95 rival Francis Marion (18-10, 14-2). The winner of that tilt will stake claim to the Conference Carolinas regular season title, as well as the No. 1 seed in next week's league tournament as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-17 The Braves hit .270 at the net and committed just one attack error in the opening set, but needed a 6-1 run midway through to swat away a pesky effort by the Bobcats. Kaden Hill's kill pulled the visitors to within a point, 10-9, but a service error moments later signaled a 6-1 run that fueled the final outcome of the stanza.
SET 2 I 20-25 Lees-McRae stormed out of the second set gate with four-straight points and held off a handful of rally attempts by the Braves to even up the match. UNCP pulled to within a point, 21-20, on a late service error, but the Bobcats rattled off four consecutive points, including the last two via service ace.
SET 3 I 25-11 UNCP tallied an impressive .333 hitting percentage on the way to a dominant victory in the third set. The Bobcats forged a 6-4 advantage on a bad set by the hosts, but the Black & Gold answered with 10-straight points to storm ahead for good, and then posted the final six points of the set as well.
SET 4 I 26-24 The visitors committed just three attack errors in the fourth and final set, but a late rally by UNCP wrapped the day in Black & Gold. Kaden Hill's kill set up a set-point opportunity for the Bobcats, but the hosts tacked up the final three points of the afternoon, including two via kill.

SERIES NOTE
The Braves have now captured the last two matchups in their nine-match-old series with Lees-McRae, but Saturday's contest marked the first-ever meeting in Pembroke. UNCP quelled a three-match series win streak with a 5-set victory in 2015 – the last meeting between the two squads before Saturday.

The Conference Carolinas regular season championship will be on the line for both teams on Wednesday when the Braves suit up to take on I-95 rival Francis Marion (18-10, 14-2 CC) at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. and admission is free.
