Men’s Basketball Dominates Inside, Topples King

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team recorded 78 points in the paint and got double-double performances from seniors Deon Berrien and Spencer Levi on the way to a 105-76 win over visiting King on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the second win in less than 24 hours for the Braves (7-1, 4-1 CC) who shot better than 62 percent from the field in the opening half, and finished the afternoon with a season-best 10 3-pointers as well. King (4-3, 2-3), who registered a 16-point win at Francis Marion on Friday evening, has now dropped three of its last five outings.

THE BASICS
SCORE: UNC Pembroke 105, Lees-McRae 76
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 7-1, 4-1 CC; King 4-3, 2-3 CC
LOCATION: Pembroke, N.C. (Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
A nip-and-tuck affair for the first four minutes of the afternoon, Spencer Levi's fastbreak dunk at the 15:34 mark sparked the Braves on a 14-3 run that spanned the next 4-1/2 minutes and pushed the Braves out in front for good. UNCP registered 24 made field goals in the opening half, and eventually rode a 21-point advantage, 58-37, into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
The Tornado threatened to trim its advantage under 20 points when a fastbreak layup by J'son Brooks with 10:51 remaining made it a 78-57 contest, but the hosts tacked up eight-straight points after that and eventually led by as many as 32 points, 100-78, when newcomer Bradlee Haskell pushed the Black & Gold to the century mark on a free throw with 4:25 left to play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Redshirt junior Jordan Ratliffe led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting in just 26 minutes of action.
+ Senior Spencer Levi cashed in on his fourth double-double in the last five games with 23 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. He also added a season-best four blocks and as many assists.
+ Senior Deon Barrien tallied his first double-double of the campaign with 11 points and 10 boards, while also tallying four assists and a trio of steals.
+ Senior Tyrell Kirk narrowly missed his fourth career double-double performance, finishing the game with 15 points and nine rebounds, as well as a game-best six assists.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP has now registered 100 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Braves tallied a 105-91 triumph at Flagler on Feb. 18, 2015, and then registered a 115-92 win at Armstrong State three days later.
+ The Braves have now out-rebounded 20-straight opponents dating back to a win over USC Aiken on Feb. 19, 2020. UNCP has posted double-digit rebounding disparities 13 times across that stretch.
+ The Black & Gold has now won 30 of its last 31 games when scoring 81 or more points. Its lone loss over that time frame was a 90-87 overtime setback to Columbus State in the 2019-20 Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
UP NEXT
The Braves will get an 11-day break from competition before closing out a three-game home stand against Converse (4-3, 3-2 CC) on December 15 at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
