No. 14 Baseball Finishes Off Weekend Sweep Of Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team sent 11 batters to the plate in an 8-run opening frame and hit cruise control the rest of the way out as the Braves finished off a weekend sweep of Claflin with a 14-4 win over the Panthers in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader. UNCP rallied back from a 7-4 deficit in Saturday's opener to eventually register a 15-11 triumph.
 
The result kept the Braves (6-2, 4-2 PBC) perfect in their 11-game-old series with Claflin who is in the midst of their second season as an associate member of the Peach Belt Conference. It was the ninth-straight setback for the Panthers (1-9, 1-9) whose lone victory this season came via a 16-13 scoring melee against then-unranked North Georgia.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 4 Wellington Guzman reached on a leadoff single, moved into position on a sacrifice bunt, and eventually scored on a costly passed ball. Ethan Baucom reached base via walk and an error in the same at-bat, and eventually gave the Braves a 4-2 lead when he crossed the plate on an ill-timed throwing error.
BOT 5 Claflin loaded the bases with its first three at-bats of the frame and used a fielding error moments later to knot the score back up with a pair of runs. The hosts loaded the bases again two at-bats later to set the table for a 3-run double off the bat of Jordan McCray that gave the Panthers a 7-4 advantage.
TOP 6 The Braves sent their entire order to the plate in a 2-hit, 7-run inning that was aided by a pair of errors as well. Trevor Clemons, Gage Hammonds, Spencer Faulkner and Ethan Baucom all recorded a lone RBI in the frame that put the Black & Gold back on top, 11-7.
BOT 6 The Panthers got a 2-run double from Daniel Powell to chop their deficit in half, and then tied the score on a run-scoring double by Da'Avion Sumpter and a sacrifice fly from Nicholas Johnson.
TOP 8 Christian Jayne walked to lead off the frame, and eventually scored on a suicide squeeze bunt off of the bat of Wellington Guzman. River Ryan's 3-run bomb three batters later added some insurance runs for the Braves.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 The Braves sent 11 batters to the plate in an 8-run, 5-hit frame that was aided by an error as well. Ethan Baucom registered a hit in both of his plate appearances in the inning, including a 3-run dinger than padded the visitors' lead out to 8-0. Trevor Clemons, Gage Hammonds, Spencer Faulkner, Wellington Guzman and Garrett Littleton all registered run-scoring at-bats as well.
