No. 14 Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep Of No. 8 Georgia College

PEMBROKE – The 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 15 hits and scored 11 times behind a four-armed pitching staff to finish off a weekend sweep of 8th-ranked Georgia College with an 11-5 triumph in the back half of a series-closing doubleheader on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The Braves scored six unanswered runs, including two in the bottom of the ninth inning, to register a 6-5 win in Saturday's opener.
 
It was the 19th win in the last 21 home outings for the Braves (11-5, 9-3 PBC) who posted a series sweep of Georgia College for the first time since the 2011 campaign. The result marked the fourth-straight loss for the Bobcats (8-5, 7-5) who tacked up wins in eight of their first nine contests this season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 2 Georgia College collected three hits and a pair of walks – all with two outs showing on the right field scoreboard – to fuel a big rally that gave it an early lead. Jay Saunders scored on a costly fielding error by the Braves, while Paul Grazzii padded the lead out to 5-0 on a grand slam.
BOT 2 The Black & Gold put together a two-out rally of its own in the home half of the inning, scoring its first run of the game on a costly passed ball and then using a 2-run homer off the bat of Wellington Guzman to cut its deficit down to a pair of runs.
BOT 8 River Ryan climbed aboard via an ill-timed fielding error, and moved to third base on a single up the middle from Gage Hammonds in the ensuing at-bat. Another fielding error in the following at-bat brought Ryan scampering home from third base.
BOT 9 Grant Elliott singled to lead off the frame, and crossed the plate with the game-tying run on Spencer Faulkner's seeing-eye single through the right side. River Ryan's out-out RBI single later in the frame let the Black & Gold walk off with the series-clinching victory.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Georgia College loaded the bases with its first four at-bats of the inning, and grabbed a 4-3 lead on Cal Gentry's 2-run double down the right field line. Paul Grazzini scurried home on a wild pitch later in the frame to give the visitors a 5-3 lead.
BOT 4 Garrett Littleton drew a two-out walk and eventually scored the go-ahead run on Spencer Faulkner's triple down the right field line. A two-strike, two-out RBI single from Gage Hammonds brought Faulkner racing home with the 7-5 lead.
BOT 7 Spencer Faulkner singled to lead off the frame, and River Ryan followed with a monstrous homer over the fence in left field to provide a pair of insurance runs. Christian Jayne (sac fly) and Wellington Guzman (double) tallied RBI at-bats later in the frame as well.
