Volleyball Cuts Through Young Harris For Fifth Home Win

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team showcased its hot hand at the net for the second-straight day, hitting .274 and committing just 11 hitting errors on the way to a straight-sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-10) victory over Peach Belt Conference foe Young Harris on Friday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the fifth win in six home outings this season for the Braves (5-3, 5-3 PBC) who have now posted consecutive shutouts of league opponents for the first time since Oct. 29-Nov. 2, 2011. The first-year Mountain Lions (0-7, 0-7) have now surrendered 14-straight sets, with their lone set victory of the season coming on March 13 against league-leading Flagler.

The Black & Gold, who posted its best hitting percentage (.264) in nearly a decade in Thursday's home blanking of Lander, hit 10 points higher on Friday. The .274 clip is the best hitting percentage for the club against a PBC opponent since posting a .356 mark in a 4-set win over Lander on Sept. 30, 2005.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-12 Young Harris battled back from an early 6-2 deficit and pulled to within one point, 7-6, on an attack error by the Braves, but it was all Black & Gold after that. Erin O'Donnell's kill moments later signaled a 13-1 run for the hosts, including 10 consecutive points, that eventually pushed the advantage out to 20-7. UNCP eventually closed out a 25-12 win on block assists from Brianna Warren and Shannon Skryd.
SET 2 I 25-19 The Mountain Lions were the aggressor in the early going of the second set as the visitors scored seven of the first 10 points to take control early. The back-and-forth set saw its ninth tie score (18-18) after a service error by the hosts, but that was enough to spark the Black & Gold who responded by tacking up seven of the last eight points of the set to steal a 25-19 set win and a 2-0 lead on the afternoon.
SET 3 I 25-10 The Braves held Young Harris to a -.067 hitting percentage in what would turn out to be the final set of the afternoon to fuel the final outcome. The Mountain Lions forged a 6-5 lead on an attack error by UNCP, but the Braves answered with a 17-2 run that all but put the final bow on the wrapping. A kill from Brianna Warren, as well as an attack error by the visitors, marked the final points of the afternoon.
