No. 13 Baseball Sweeps Twinbill With No. 21 North Georgia

PEMBROKE – The 13th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team combined to hit 11-for-27 (.407) with two outs showing and rallied back from early deficits in both games to register a key doubleheader sweep of visiting and 21st-ranked North Georgia on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The Braves posted a 10-8 walk-off win in the opener, and rallied back from an early 3-0 deficit to grab a 9-4 win in the nightcap.
 
The victories played key in the Peach Belt Conference standings as the Braves (26-6, 22-4 PBC) extended their lead out to three games over the Nighthawks (24-11, 22-10) with seven league games still yet to play. UNCP has now taken the opening game of 12-straight weekend series dating back to last season, and has nine doubleheader sweeps to its credit in 2021 as well.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 5 North Georgia put runners at the corners with its first two at-bats of the frame and padded its lead out to a pair of runs on a costly throwing error following a failed pickoff attempt. Andres Perez registered his second 2-run homer of the afternoon later in the frame to give the Nighthawks a 5-1 advantage.
BOT 5 Grant Elliott hit a one-out solo homer over the fence in left field to get the scoring started. Spencer Faulkner and River Ryan each climbed aboard via two-out singles to set the table for Gage Hammonds who crushed a one-strike offering to straightaway centerfield to knot things up.
TOP 8 The Nighthawks took advantage of a trio of errors to plate a pair of runs in the eighth. Brady Eeles reached base via error and eventually scored on a second miscue. Nik Levensteins reached base via an intentional walk, and eventually came trotting home on a one-out double from Jake Howard.
BOT 9 River Ryan (hit by pitch) and Gage Hammonds (walk) both reached via one-out free passes to chase reliever Eddie Galatas from the hill, and Bobby Dixon launched a one-ball offering from reliever Pete Weil just over the top of the fence in centerfield.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Nik Levensteins reached via a five-pitch walk with one out and eventually scored on Will Hardigree's one-out double. Jake Arnold doubled home Hardigree with the next at-bat, and scored on a fielding error later in the frame to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
BOT 6 The Braves put runners at the corners with their first two at-bats of the frame, and River Ryan came scurrying home moments later off of Bobby Dixon's one-out double. Christian Jayne knotted the score up at three apiece with a 2-run bomb in the next at-bat, and Garrett Littleton gave UNCP the lead for good with a one-out RBI single three batters later.
