No. 11 Columbus State Shuts Out Soccer In Neutral Site Matchup

EVANS, Ga. – Eleventh-ranked Columbus State scored a pair of goals in each half and held off a furious second-half surge by the UNC Pembroke soccer team on the way to a 4-0 win over the Braves on Tuesday evening at Blanchard Woods Park.
 
The Braves (1-3-0) mustered just four shots on goal in the shutout, but managed to tack up 11 shots in the second half in the loss. It was the second-straight series win for the Cougars (4-0-1) whose only blemish this season is a road draw with Catawba. 










 
SCORING SUMMARY
17' A Columbus State corner kick from Maria Kilset was placed perfectly in the box and found the head of Parker Morgan for the first score of the game.
25' Rachael Sweigard fired off a shot that was blocked, but she played her own rebound and slipped one in the goal to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
51' Brooke Quimette crossed a ball in the box to Lauren Barnes who fired off a shot to the low right corner for the third score of the match.
73' Maddie DeFranco used a pass from Samantha Romaine and Sydney Ormsby to boot the final goal into the back of the net.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Rilee Seering took a team-high five shots on the evening, including two shots on target.
+ Newcomer Ashleigh Harris attempted a career-high four shots. 
 
NOTABLES
+ The Black & Gold tallied a total of 13 shots in the game, 11 of which came in the second half. 
+ The Cougars improved to 21-5-1 all-time in the series with the Braves, including a 6-1-0 mark in neutral site affairs. The only neutral site blemish for Columbus State in the series was a 1-0 setback to UNCP in the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Braves will step back into conference play on Saturday when they travel to Banner Elk to take on Lees-McRae (3-1-0, 0-0-0 CC). Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Tate Field.
