Volleyball Stuffs Belmont Abbey For Fifth-Straight Win

BELMONT – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered a dozen blocks and took advantage of 25 attack errors by winless Belmont Abbey to roll to a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) over the Crusaders on Wednesday evening in the Wheeler Center.

The triumph marked the fifth-straight victory for the Braves (9-5, 2-0 CC), as well as the fourth-straight road win for the club – its longest winning skein away from Pembroke in two seasons. The setback signaled the 12th-straight loss for the Crusaders (0-11, 0-1) dating back to an abbreviated spring season.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-15 The Braves stormed out of the gates early, using a .333 hitting percentage to take the early advantage in the match. The squads split the first six points of set No. 1, but UNCP strung together four-straight points moments later to pull away for good. A five-point run later in the set padded the lead out further.
SET 2 I 25-16 UNCP raked in 12 of the first 15 points of the second set on the way to rolling to match control. The Crusaders put together a 7-1 run and eventually pulled to within three points, 15-12, following a kill from Mia Samaha, but the Braves answered with a 7-1 run of their own to swing the momentum back.
SET 3 I 25-19 The sides combined for 18 attack errors in a frightful third set, but a late run by the Black & Gold helped it finish off the evening sweep. The hosts strung together four-straight points to stake claim to a 16-12 advantage midway through the stanza, but the visitors signaled their intentions by rattling off 11 of the next 13 points to eventually forge a 23-18 advantage. Belmont Abbey quelled a 5-0 spurt by UNCP on Mia Samaha's kill, but the Braves finished it out with a kill by Brianna Warren, as well as block assists from Warren and Katie Pressley.

SERIES NOTE
Wednesday's result snapped a six-match series losing skid for the Braves who had not tasted victory against Belmont Abbey since Aug. 29, 2009. The Black & Gold logged wins in just five sets over that six-match span as well. All four UNCP victories in the series (BAC leads, 6-4) have come via shutout.

UP NEXT
The Braves will make their long-awaited return home on Friday when they lace up to take on Conference Carolinas foe Chowan (4-7, 1-0 CC) as part of Social Media Night at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Start time is slated for 6 p.m. and admission to all 2021 UNCP home volleyball matches is free.
