Volleyball Sweeps Barton, Runs Win Streak To Eight

PEMBROKE – Senior Kaila Crowder logged a team-best 11 kills, and registered her fourth double-double of the season with 11 digs as well, to lead the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-19) sweep of Barton on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The triumph pushed the Braves (12-5, 5-0 CC) out to their eighth-straight win, while also helping the club log its fourth home win of the season in as many attempts as well. It was the third-straight setback for the Bulldogs (3-4, 0-2) who fell to 0-2 in road matches with the result as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-14 The Braves hit a cool .429 at the net in the opening set, but had to shake off a slow start out of the gate in order to secure the victory in the stanza. The Bulldogs tacked up five of the set's first six points, but UNCP steadily chipped away at the deficit and eventually used a three-point surge to storm ahead for good. Barton pulled to within a point, 14-13, on a service ace midway through, but the hosts answered with 10-straight points to force a set point.
SET 2 I 25-20 Barton stormed out of the gates again in the second set, and eventually forged an early 9-3 advantage following an attack error by the hosts, but UNCP raked in eight of the next 10 points to get to within striking distance, 10-9, and then rattled off seven of the next 10 points to take a lead it would not relinquish. The hosts closed it out by capturing four of the set's final five points.
SET 3 I 25-19 Despite a strong start by the Black & Gold, Barton rebounded with an 8-1 run to eventually forge a 9-7 lead following two-straight service aces. Tied at 13 apiece at the midway point, however, UNCP threw up a 9-2 run swing the momentum over to its side entirely. Barton fought off two-straight set points and appeared to be putting together a rally, but a service error put the finishing touched on the win for the Braves.

SERIES NOTE
UNCP has now won two-straight matches with Barton and leads the overall series, 7-4. Five of UNCP's seven victories in the series have come via straight sets.
 
UP NEXT
UNCP will open up a short two-match road trip on Friday when it treks to Franklin Springs, Ga., to take on Conference Carolinas rival Emmanuel (4-8, 2-1 CC). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
