Volleyball Falls To Two Unbeaten Teams At USC Aiken Invitational

AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team combined to register 20 blocks, including 18 in its final matchup of the day, but could not crack the armor of two unbeaten teams to close out its stay at the USC Aiken Invitational. The Braves dropped a 3-0 (12-25, 20-25, 19-25) contest to USC Aiken to start its Saturday competition, and then fell 3-1 (24-26, 24-26, 25-21, 20-25) in a heartbreaking matchup with Auburn Montgomery.

The setbacks put a damper on the season-opening weekend for the Braves (2-2) who registered their first 2-0 start since the 2007 campaign with convincing victories over Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman on Friday. USC Aiken and Auburn Montgomery both swept all four of their scheduled matchups at the event.

UNCP will now refocus to make its home debut on Tuesday when it takes on both Newberry and Winston-Salem State at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Braves will battle the Wolves in a 2 p.m. matchup, and will lock horns with Winston-Salem State at 6 p.m. Admission to all 2021 UNCP volleyball home matches is free.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 12-25	USC Aiken hit a blistering .522 in the opening set and committed just two attack errors in taking control of the match early. UNCP took the opening point, but the Pacers had built an 8-3 lead minutes later, and then used an 8-2 run to pad their advantage out to 21-10.
SET 2 I 20-25	The second set proved to be a little kinder to the Braves, but the Pacers utilized four service aces and a trio of blocks to take command. The Braves used a service error midway through to forge a 12-10 advantage, but USC Aiken countered with three-straight points and never trailed after that. The Black & Gold trailed just 20-19 following a Shannon Skryd kill, but USC Aiken tacked up four-straight points to all but put it away.
SET 3 I 19-25	The Braves mustered just a .068 hitting percentage in the third and final set, and the Pacers tallied four more service aces and a .231 hitting percentage to put it away. UNCP was within two points, 8-6, after an early kill from Shannon Skryd, but the Pacers captured seven of the next nine points to pull away for good.

MATCH SUMMARY
SET 1 I 24-26	A back-and-forth affair from the get-go, the Braves fought off three-straight set points to give the opening set its eighth tie score, but the Warhawks finally pushed themselves over the hump on a kill from Maria Nicolau and an ensuing attack error by the Black & Gold.
SET 2 I 24-26	The Eagles came out of the second-set gates on fire, winning the first three points and eventually taking a 19-9 lead on two-straight kills from the hand of Erin Edwards. The Braves won six-straight points later in the set to pull to within two, 22-20, but Carson-Newman used two-straight kills, as well as a set-point attack error from the Black & Gold, to knot the match up.
SET 3 I 25-21	The Braves hit a match-best .222 in the third set and finally got on the board thanks to nine errors by the Warhawks, as well as a trio of blocks. The Warhawks took a short-lived lead, 5-4, on a service ace, but UNCP responded by capturing seven of the next eight points to take the lead for good. A late 7-1 run by Auburn Montgomery helped it pull to within three points, 23-20, but the Braves used a pair of kills from Shannon Skryd to notch their first set victory of the afternoon.
SET 4 I 20-25	The Warhawks hit better than .300 at the net in what would turn out to be a decisive set that saw 10 tie scores and four lead changes. UNCP notched three-straight points to forge a late 20-17 advantage, but Auburn Montgomery scored the final eight points of the afternoon, including seven via kills, to seal the outcome.
