No. 11 Men’s Basketball Overwhelms Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team logged 52 points in the paint and converted 18 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points on the way to a 95-55 rout of Converse on Friday evening inside the Tom & Tracy Hannah Gymnasium.

The result marked the 11th-straight win for the Braves (15-1, 12-1 CC) who now own the program's longest win streak in 31 seasons. It was the third-straight setback for the Valkyries (5-10, 4-7) who dropped a 14-point decision to the Black & Gold earlier this season in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Converse gave the visiting Braves all that they could handle through the first 7-1/2 minutes of action, but Nate Dunlop's 3-pointer at the 12:12 mark ignited the Braves on a modest 11-3 run that helped them pull away for good. UNCP shot 50 percent from the field in the opening stanza, but fueled its offensive production by converting a dozen offensive rebounds into 12 points. The Black & Gold eventually toted a 40-26 lead into the intermission.
2ND HALF
UNCP scored 55 points and converted better than 57 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half to fuel the rout. The Braves pushed their lead out to 20 points, 54-34, just less than four minutes into the second half, and used a 19-4 run later in the stanza to eventually cushion their lead out to 39 points, 81-42, on a pair of free throws from freshman Nygell Verdier at the halfway point. The visitors led by as many as 42 points, 93-51, after Javonte Waverly's 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Senior Spencer Levi recorded his eighth double-double of the season with a game-best 20 points and 12 rebounds. He was 10-for-15 from the field in 25 minutes on the court.
+ Senior Tyrell Kirk added 17 points on a 7-for-11 shooting clip, including a trio of 3-pointers. He also finished his night with three assists, one block and a steal.
+ Redshirt freshman Nate Dunlop came off of the bench to log 13 points in 19 minutes of action. He also chipped in four rebounds and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
NOTABLES
+ The Braves now own the program's longest win streak since the 1990-91 (31-plus seasons) squad rattled off 12-straight victories on the way to a school record 27-6 clip. Four teams (1966-67, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1990-91) share the school record with 12 consecutive victories.
+ UNCP has now posted a road win streak of five or more games in each of the last five full seasons. The Black & Gold has outscored opponents by an average of 20.2 points per game (86.6-66.4) over its current road winning skein.
+ The Black & Gold has now won 36 of its last 37 games when scoring 81 or more points. Its lone loss over that time frame was a 90-87 overtime setback to Columbus State in the 2019-20 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. UNCP has now scored 90 or more points nine times this season.
UP NEXT
The Braves will get a short rest before making a 37-mile drive to Tigerville, S.C., on Saturday to battle North Greenville (4-8, 2-7 CC) in the back half of a 2 p.m. doubleheader inside Hayes Gymnasium.
