WINGATE – The UNC Pembroke swimming team captured six individual event titles, including a pair of school-record performances from senior Gillian Manning, but were unable to pull the upset in a 165-94 loss to ninth-ranked Wingate on Saturday afternoon inside the Wingate Natatorium.
 
The setback snapped a five-match win streak in dual meets for the Braves (5-1) who capped the regular season portion of their 2021-22 slate on Saturday. Wingate improved to 2-1 in dual meets this season with the triumph, and have now captured both matchups in the series with the Braves. The Bulldogs posted a 181-81 win over the Black & Gold last season.
 
Manning bested her own 2-week-old school record in the 200-yard Backstroke by 2-1/2 seconds on the way to besting the field in that discipline, and then eclipsed teammate Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos's 1-month-old program superlative and NCAA B Standard qualifying time in the 400-yard Individual Medley. She also won the 200-yard Butterfly event as well. Manning has now registered 10 NCAA B Standard qualifying times across seven events in 2021-22.
 
Mariel Mencia Martinez topped the field in the 50-yard Freestyle, while also registering a runner-up finish in the 100-yard Freestyle, and Nathalia Silva capped the day's individual event winners with a triumph in the 500-yard Freestyle. Manning, Mencia Martinez and Silva also teamed up with Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos in capturing the 400-yard Freestyle Relay as well.
 
The Braves will now get a 2-week respite from competition before diving head in to the Conference Carolinas Championships. That event will be held, Feb. 16-19, inside the Kingsport (Tenn.) Aquatic Center.
