Women’s Basketball Fights, But Drops Tough One To Chowan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball used a 26-point fourth quarter to spark a run at a comeback, but Chowan pulled away and held on for a 62-54 victory on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The setback for the Braves (8-4, 6-2 CC) snapped a three-game winning streak, as well as snapped a three-game winning streak against Chowan. The victory for the Hawks (6-4, 6-2 CC) marked the first win in Pembroke since the 2011 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Chowan jumped out to an early 7-2 lead off of a trey from Tyaysia Sharpe with 6:40 remaining in the quarter. UNC Pembroke trimmed its deficit back to 9-7 off a jumper from Kelci Adams just under the three-minute mark. The hosts took a 10-9 lead moments later with a three from Alcenia Purnell and held a slight 12-10 lead heading into the second period.
2ND QUARTER
Courtney Smith knotted the score at 16 apiece with a running layup just four minutes into the quarter. The Hawks used a 15-3 scoring run to extend their lead out to 31-19 with two minutes remaining in the half. Alcenia Purnell knocked down a trey at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker rooms with Chowan leading 31-29.
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke chipped away at the deficit, 40-26, with an old-fashioned three-point play from Gabby Smith with six minutes remaining in the frame. Chowan limited the hosts to just 11 percent shooting during the quarter, and took its largest lead of the evening, 48-26 with a made free throw from Shequana Jackson.
4TH QUARTER
UNCP used a 13-2 run that stretched to the three-minute mark to trim the deficit back to 52-41. The Braves cut the deficit back to single digits, 59-50, off of a fast break 3-pointer from Zaria Clark with 37 ticks remaining in regulation, but Chowan drained two free throws to fend off the comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Freshman Zaria Clark scored a team-best 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Clark also pulled down seven boards, logged two assists and two steals.
+ Redshirt sophomore Alcenia Purnell logged double-figure scoring with 11 points. Purnell tallied two steals, as well as one block and one assist.
+ Kelci Adams and Courtney Smith each added 10 points. Adams was 4-for-9 from the field, while Smith connected on 8-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe. 
NOTABLES

+ The Black & Gold forced 19 Chowan turnovers and converted those into 18 points.
+ UNCP was limited to just 27-percent shooting from the field, which marked a season-low.
+ The setback snapped a three-game winning streak, and was just the third loss on their home court this season.
+ The Hawks held a 46-33 advantage in the rebounds column. 

UP NEXT

The Braves will be back in action on Thursday when they welcome Francis Marion (4-5, 3-4 CC) to Pembroke for the Battle of I-95. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Masks are required.
