Women’s Basketball Rights Ship, Downs Francis Marion

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 17 points off of 19 turnovers and led for nearly 39 minutes as the Braves righted their ship once again with a 66-49 victory over visiting Francis Marion on Thursday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The result snapped a three-game series skid for the Braves (9-4, 7-2 CC) who toppled Francis Marion for the first time since a similarly dominant 62-44 home win on Jan. 29, 2020. It was the second loss in the last three outings for the Patriots (4-6, 3-5) who fell to 1-5 on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Neither team found their groove offensively early on, but the Braves registered a 14-10 advantage in the rebounding column to fuel a 14-8 lead at the end of the first period. The Patriots opened up the game with a 3-pointer from Scarlett Gilmore, but UNCP answered with eight of the next nine points to grab the momentum. A mild 6-0 run gave the hosts a 14-6 advantage, and Francis Marion put up the final points of the quarter on a layup at the 3:12 mark.
2ND QUARTER
The Braves converted five offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points to stretch their lead out to 32-15 heading into the locker rooms. The Patriots cut into their deficit with the first five points of the second quarter, but an old-fashioned 3-point play by Gabby Smith sparked the hosts on a first-half ending 15-2 run. The Patriots converted went 1-for-9 from the field over the final nine minutes of the period, and also turned the ball over five times.
3RD QUARTER
UNCP retained its hot hand in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field, while also forcing six turnovers, to extend its lead out to 22 points, 51-29, heading into the final period. A lay-in from Lillian Flantos with 7:55 to play ignited the Black & Gold on a 17-3 run that spanned more than 6-1/2 minutes and pushed the advantage out to 28 points. Francis Marion canned a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to close out the quarter.
4TH QUARTER
The Patriots shot better than 57 percent in the fourth quarter, but were unable to dig out of the hole. A jumper from Zaria Woods at the 4:36 mark trimmed the deficit back to 13 points, 60-47, but Francis Marion connected on just one of their final six attempt from the field, and turned the ball over twice down the stretch to seal the outcome.
