| By:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team snapped a two-match skid with a dominant win over conference rival King, but the Braves could not hold back surges from both 8th-ranked Indianapolis and 15th-ranked Colorado Mesa on the way to a 1-2 mark at the NWCA National Duals on Thursday.

Indianapolis (3-1) logged a quartet of bonus-point wins to key a 25-15 triumph over the Blaxk & Gold in the opening round of the prestigious event which is being held inside the Kentucky Expo Center. UNCP got back on track in its consolation-round opener with a 34-9 rout of King (3-2), but had its stay in Louisville ended with a 33-10 setback to the nationally-ranked Mavericks.

Chance Cottingham helped the Braves forge an early 9-3 lead on Indianapolis with a 5-2 victory in the 141-pound bout, but the Greyhounds captured each of the next five matchups, including three bonus-point results, to fuel the final outcome. The Black & Gold closed out the dual with a pair of wins via decision as Bryce Walker downed Aidan Petersen by a 7-6 count, and Shaffer closed it out with a 2-0 shutout of Dennis Hubbard.

UNCP came out on top in seven of the individual matchups with King, including five bonus-point wins, to breeze past the Tornado. Rahsaan Vereen capped a run of four-straight wins for the Braves with a 17-9 major decision at 165 pounds to help UNCP stretch its lead on the team scoreboard out to 21-3, while Walker and Shaffer put the finishing touches on the dual with bonus-point victories.

The Braves will return to action on Tuesday when they suit up to battle South Atlantic Conference Carolinas foe Queens (1-6, 0-3 CC) in a 7 p.m. dual meet at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. It will mark the first home competition for the Black & Gold since early November.
