Football Tops West Liberty On Homecoming

PEMBROKE – Zechariah Adams-Duckson's 70-yard touchdown run late in first quarter was all the offense the UNC Pembroke football team would need as the Braves rallied behind a lockdown defensive effort to overwhelm visiting West Liberty, 24-3, on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

It was the fourth win in the last five outings for the Braves (5-4, 5-3 MEC) who improved to 13-2 all-time in Homecoming contests, while also registering their seventh-straight win in such contests as well. The setback marked the fourth loss in the last five outings for the Hilltoppers (4-5, 3-5) who fell to 1-3 all-time in the series with UNCP as well.

THE BASICS
SCORE: UNC Pembroke 24, West Liberty 3
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 5-4, 5-3 MEC; West Liberty 4-5, 3-5 MEC
LOCATION: Pembroke, N.C. (Grace P. Johnson Stadium)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNCP escaped a first-quarter funk with their third possession of the afternoon. Zechariah Adams-Duckson found a hole in the West Liberty defense and used his shifty speed to race 70 yards untouched into the end zone on the opening play of the drive. UNCP 7, WLU 0

The Braves doubled the lead on their ensuing possession as Josh Jones and JaQuan Kelly consumed all seven plays of a 12-yard touchdown drive that was set up by a good punt return from Dante Bowlding. Jones finished off the scoring possession when he diced through a pair of Hilltoppers defenders and dove into the end zone. UNCP 14, WLU 0
2ND QUARTER
The hosts scored their final points of the opening half with an 11-play, 51-yard scoring drive in the final minutes of the second period. Josh Jones completed four of his six pass attempts for 45 yards, while also rushing once for 15 yards, before the drive stalled inside the red zone. Alex Alvarado would make good on a 36-yard field goal attempt, however. UNCP 17, WLU 0
3RD QUARTER
The Hilltoppers finally got off the mark with the opening possession of the second half. Anthony Barmer welcomed himself to the ballgame by carrying the ball five times for 28 yards, but it was a 23-yard field goal by Justin Kaplan that put the only points of the day on the scoreboard for the visitors. UNCP 17, WLU 3
4TH QUARTER
Simeal Burke's interception and ensuing 71-yard return set the Braves up inside the 10-yard line, and the UNCP offense answered the call one play later. Josh Jones found Faheem Diaab on a quick 6-yard touchdown pass over the middle to cap the scoring on the day. UNCP 24, WLU 3
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Redshirt sophomore Zechariah Adams-Duckson accounted for 76 yards of total offense on the afternoon, including a 70-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Adams-Duckson also hauled in a 15-yard reception in the contest as well.
