Football Holds Off Wheeling For Second-Straight Win

WHEELING, W.Va. – Josh Jones connected with Faheem Diaab in the back of the end zone to give the UNC Pembroke football team its first lead of the afternoon with 9:08 left to play, Matt Greenwood missed a potential game-winning field goal attempt with 60 seconds remaining, and the Braves rallied all the way back from a 13-0 deficit in the first quarter to beat Wheeling, 17-16, on Saturday.

The result gave the Black & Gold (3-3, 3-2 MEC) consecutive victories for the first time this season, while also helping the Braves snap a four-game road skid as well. The result marred Homecoming for the Cardinals (4-2, 3-2) who had won three-straight games heading into the weekend.

Jones became the program's all-time passing yards leader with an 8-yard pass to backfield mate Zechariah Adams-Duckson just seconds before the eventual game-winning touchdown pass, and finished his afternoon with 194 yards on 23-of-36 passing. Redshirt junior Rodney Smith led the receiving corps with seven catches for 79 yards,

Redshirt junior Tyreke King logged a game-best 11 tackles, while also matching a 2-week-old school record with four sacks as well, to pace the defensive effort for the visitors. Sophomore LaTrell Jewsome recorded a key interception in the fourth quarter for Code Black as well.

THE BASICS
SCORE: UNC Pembroke 17, Wheeling 16
RECORDS: UNC Pembroke 3-3, 3-2 MEC; Wheeling 4-2, 3-2 MEC
LOCATION: Wheeling, W.Va. (Bishop Schmitt Field)
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Running back Sy Alli shouldered a bulk of the load on a 6-play, 36-yard drive on the opening possession of the day for the hosts. Wheeling's drive stalled inside UNCP's 10-yard line however, and the Cardinals were forced to settle with a 22-yard field goal from Matt Greenwood. WU 3, UNCP 0

Wheeling's defense forced a 3-and-out later in the period, and set up shop at midfield for what would turn out to be a short scoring drive. Javon Davis connected with Eli Young for 10 yards on the opening play of the possession, and Sy Alli finished it off with a 40-yard touchdown run up the middle. WU 10, UNCP 0

A botched snap on a 4th-down punt attempt on the ensuing possession for the Braves gave the hosts good field position again, this time inside UNCP's red zone. Tyreke King registered a 12-yard sack on third down to quell the touchdown threat, but the Cardinals still added to their lead with a 49-yard field goal from Matt Greenwood. WU 13, UNCP 0
2ND QUARTER
UNCP bridged the first and second quarters with an 11-play, 49-yard scoring drive that eventually culminated with Alex Alvarado's 26-yard field goal. Josh Jones completed three passes for 40 yards to key the possession. WU 13, UNCP 3

The Braves went to work again on their following possession, driving 90 yards on 10 plays to climb back into the contest. Josh Jones completed all five of his pass attempts for 73 yards, including a 29-yard strike to JaQuan Kelly on a key third-down situation, before finishing off the drive with a 4-yard scoring scamper up the middle. WU 13, UNCP 10

Wheeling picked off a pass at midfield with just more than a minute left before the intermission to set up what would be its final points of the day. The Cardinals drove to the 32-yard line in six plays to get into position for placekicker Matt Greenwood who nailed a 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired. WU 16, UNCP 10
3RD QUARTER
No scoring.
4TH QUARTER
Josh Jones engineered an 8-play, 71-yard go-ahead touchdown drive on the opening possession of the fourth quarter. The senior signal caller completed all six of his pass attempts for 57 yards, while a key 15-yard personal foul by the Cardinals moved the visitors into the red zone. UNCP 17, WU 16
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Redshirt junior Tyreke King registered a quartet of quarterback sacks, including two in the first quarter alone, to match a 2-week-old school record that was established by line mate Branden Spencer against Fairmont State. King also registered a career-best 11 tackles against the Cardinals on Saturday.
+ Senior Josh Jones became UNCP's all-time passing yards leader with an 8-yard completion to Zechariah Adams-Duckson in the fourth quarter. Jones, who already owns program records for pass attempts and pass completions, has now thrown for 8,970 yards in his collegiate career.
+ Sophomore LaTrell Jewsome grabbed his first career interception with a key pick off in the fourth quarter. He also turned in a solo tackle on Saturday as well.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP has now posted victories in consecutive games for the first time since registering a 3-game win streak last season. Saturday's triumph also snapped a four-game road losing streak for the Black & Gold as well.
+ The Braves have now limited two-straight opponents to 250 yards or less of total offense for the first time since holding both Winston-Salem State (235) and Fayetteville State (176), respectively, under that plateau to start the 2015 campaign.
+ The Braves limited Wheeling to just 107 passing yards on Saturday – the fewest passing yards for a UNCP opponent since UVa.-Wise mustered just 77 passing yards against Code Black on Nov. 16, 2019.
UP NEXT
UNCP will get a short rest before resuming its 2022 slate on Thursday against West Virginia State (4-2, 3-2 MEC) on Robeson County Schools Night at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
