Soccer Edged By Flagler In NCAA Tournament Opener

SALISBURY – Moa Arlebo's second-chance goal in the 30th minute proved to be the lone score of the match as third-seeded Flagler fought off a flurry of offensive opportunities by the sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke soccer team to edge the Braves, 1-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

The result snapped an eight-match unbeaten streak for the Braves (16-3-2) who fell to 2-6-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Saints (14-3-2) pushed their win streak out to five matches, while also improving to 9-4-2 all-time against the Black & Gold. It was the second-straight season that the squads have faced one another in the NCAA postseason.

SCORING SUMMARY
30' Moa Arlebo got a head on goalkeeper Madison North's free kick service from 40 yards away and, while her initial header caught the crossbar, Arlebo followed with a chest bump to push the ball across the goal line.

TOP BRAVES
+ Junior Ashleigh Harris registered a match-best six shots on Thursday, including a trio of shots on target.
+ Newcomer Eugenie Amidou was the only other UNCP player to post multiple shots against the Saints. The freshman totaled a pair of strikes, including one shot on goal.
+ Junior Chiara Coppin lassoed a pair of saves and allowed just one goal over a complete-match performance between the pipes. It was the 19th time (21 total appearances) this season that Coppin has allowed one or fewer scores.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP's 16 overall victories this season matched the second-best wins mark in the 22-year history of the program, and marked the most wins for the Braves since the program turned in a 16-4-2 clip in 2010. The club's .810 winning percentage in 2022 ranks second in program history behind a 19-3-1 (.848) mark registered by the Braves in 2008.
+ The Black & Gold defense finished the campaign with a 0.61 goals against average, surrendering just 13 goals in 21 matches and 1,930 minutes of playing time. That is the fourth-lowest GAA in program history, and the best defensive effort for the program since the 2017 club registered a 0.56 clip.
+ The Braves outscored opponents by a 2.7 to 0.6 margin in 2022, and their 57 total goals this season matched last year's version of the Black & Gold for the second-most goals in program history.
