No. 14 Men’s Basketball Slips By Visiting Catawba

PEMBROKE – Javonte Waverly hit a go-ahead jumper with just less than two minutes to play, and Javeon Jones missed the back half of a two-shot foul with one second left on the clock to help the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team tough out a 74-73 victory over visiting Catawba on Sunday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The victory capped off a perfect weekend for the Braves (2-0) who used an overtime scoring spurt to down visiting Newberry in the opening game of the UNCP-hosted Conference Challenge. Catawba (1-1) walked away from the round-robin tournament with a split after downing Johnson C. Smith, 87-70, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Catawba shot 75 percent (6-for-8) amid a four-minute stretch in the opening half to eventually build a 20-9 lead after O'Mazeon Tinsley's fastbreak layup at the 11:13 mark. The hot hands woke up the UNCP bench, however, and Qon Murphy's 3-pointer just less than two minutes later sparked the Black & Gold on an 11-3 run that made it a one-possession game with just less than seven minutes left before the break. Javonte Waverly's 3-pointer at the 3:08 mark gave UNCP its first lead of the evening, 33-32, and the Braves would eventually take a 39-36 advantage into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
UNCP led by as many as eight points, 57-49, after two free throws from Cortez Marion-Holmes with 14:19 left to play, but an 11-2 run by the Indians over the next five minutes shifted the lead over to the visitors side. The regional matchup saw four lead changes and four tie scores over the last seven minutes of regulation before Javonte Waverly gave the hosts a lead they would hold on to.
