Women’s Basketball Picks Up Big Win Over Catawba

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball used a 25-point third quarter to help spark the offense on the way to a big 67-58 victory against Catawba on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (6-6) are now 17-13 all-time against Catawba and Monday's win marked their third consecutive win of the season. The Indians (9-3) have now lost three out of their last five contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took its first lead of the evening, 6-5, off of a running layup from Hannah Russell halfway through the opening quarter. A 10-2 run gave Catawba what would be its largest lead of the evening, 15-8, after Jada Porter drained a three from the top of the key with 3:33 remaining in the period. UNCP connected on 6-of-8 of their attempts from the charity stripe, but trailed 17-13 after a pair of free throws from Courtney Smith to end the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
The Braves knotted the score at 19 apiece after Malea Garrison's 3-pointer with 5:07 remaining in the half. Both teams struggled on offense going a combined 7-for-29 from the field during the frame, but the Indians canned a trey as time expired to send the teams into the locker rooms with Catawba leading 27-25.
3RD QUARTER
The hosts opened the second half on a 7-0 scoring surge to take a 32-27 lead just three minutes into the quarter. Catawba cut its deficit back to 35-33 after a jumper in the paint from Lyrik Thorne with four minutes remaining in the period. The Braves closed out the quarter on a 15-7 run and held a 50-40 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
UNCP shot better than 62 percent from the field during the quarter and took its largest lead of the evening, 58-43 after an 8-1 scoring advantage capped off with a layup from Kalaya Hall with 7:22 left to play in regulation.  The Indians used a 7-0 run to cut their deficit back to 58-50 with 4-1/2 minutes on the clock. The hosts knocked down five of its final six free throws to help secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Hannah Russell logged a game and career-high 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. The redshirt sophomore did not miss a field goal until late in the third quarter and nearly registered a double-double with a game and career-high nine rebounds.
+ Courtney Smith finished the contest with 18 points highlighted by a 12-for14 clip from the free throw line. The Jonesboro, Ga., native added seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in 29 minutes of work.
+ Zaria Clark added 12 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The sophomore also tallied six boards, four steals, two assists, and one block in 31 minutes of action.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke picked up 28 points from inside the paint, as well as 15 fastbreak points.
+ The Braves connected on 28-of-34 (82.4%) from the free throw line. The 28 made free throws marked a season-high, while the 34 attempts marked the second-most of the season. UNCP attempted 35 free throws against Coker in the season-opener, but only capitalized on 21 of those attempts.
+ Catawba went to the line only 11 times, which marked a season low. The Indians finished the contest shooting 45.5 percent from the line after only make five of their attempts.
+  UNCP shot better than 39 percent from the field, which marked the seventh consecutive outing where the team has shot better than 35 percent from the field.

The Braves will be back in action at home for a New Year's Eve Bash on December 31 against Limestone (6-6). Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
