No. 5 Men’s Basketball Cools Off Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – The 5th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team scored 33 points off of 23 turnovers and shot better than 64 percent from the field in the second half as the Braves began their win streak anew with a convincing 91-75 victory over visiting Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The triumph marked the 10th home win of the season for the Braves (21-2, 18-2 CC) who have now captured six of the last eight matchups in the series with Belmont Abbey. The setback snapped a six-game win streak for the Crusaders (15-9, 13-7) who had put up more than 100 points per game over their last 13 outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
It was Belmont Abbey that played the role of aggressor in the opening half as the Crusaders shot better than 43 percent from the field, including a 6-for-11 success rate from the perimeter. The visitors led 37-33 following Chandler Baker's 3-pointer with three minutes left before the break, but the Braves scored the last seven points of the opening stanza to take a 40-37 advantage into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
The Braves turned the table in the second half, converting on 64.3 percent of their field goal attempts, including a 6-for-10 clip from beyond the arch. UNCP pushed its lead out to double digits, 49-39, just 1-1/2 minutes into the latter stanza, and held a double-digit lead for much of the remainder of the game. Trenton McIntyre's jumper with 10:59 to play, however, ignited the hosts on a 15-5 run that eventually padded their lead out to 20 points, 79-59, four minutes later.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Freshman Trenton McIntyre fueled a team-best 19 points with a 9-for-12 showing at the free throw line. He also added six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
+ Freshman Javonte Waverly came off of the bench to tally 18 points on 6-of-10 field goal shooting, including a career-high four 3-pointers. He finished his day with three steals as well.
+ Redshirt junior Jordan Ratliffe added 17 points and five rebounds in a team-high 37 minutes of action, while senior Spencer Levi narrowly missed his 11th double-double of the season with 16 points and nine rebounds.
NOTABLES
+ The Braves moved to 10-1 at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court this season with Saturday's triumph, and have now tallied double-digit victories in Pembroke in each of their last five full seasons.
+ UNCP has now recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in three consecutive contests. It is the first time that the Black & Gold has accomplished that feat since late in the 2019-20 campaign.
+ Belmont Abbey's 23 turnovers was the most for a UNCP opponent this season. The Braves have forced 20 or more turnovers just three times in 2021-22, including 21 in a win at Francis Marion two weeks ago.
UP NEXT
