Baseball Explodes Late, Tops Erskine In Series Opener

DUE WEST, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke baseball time pounded out 14 hits and scored 16 times, including 13 runs in the last three innings, to pummel Erskine, 16-5, in the series opener between the two Conference Carolinas foes on Friday evening at Grier Field.
 
The triumph snapped a two-game road losing streak for the Braves (7-4, 4-0 CC) who stayed perfect through four conference games this season as well. It was the second-straight loss for Erskine (8-6, 1-3) who got the best of top-ranked and previously undefeated Wingate earlier this week.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 6 Gage Hammonds led off the frame with a double to the gap in centerfield, moved to third on a flyout to deep centerfield, and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.
BOT 6 Kane Fisher doubled to start the bottom of the inning and moved to third base on an ensuing sacrifice but before Cal Bocchino got the hosts on the board with a homer to straightaway centerfield to cut Erskine's deficit to one run, 3-2.
TOP 7 Garrett Littleton and Spencer Faulkner drew consecutive one-out free passes, and Ethan Ott gave the visitors a 4-2 advantage with a single up the middle. That opened the door for four runs in the frame, including a two-run double from Bobby Dixon, to distance the Black & Gold for good.

UP NEXT
UNCP will close out its series with the Flying Fleet with a Saturday doubleheader at Grier Field. The squads will open the twinbill with a scheduled 7-inning contest at 11 a.m., before closing out the weekend with a 9-inning regulation game approximately 30 minutes later.
