Baseball Splits Twinbill At Erskine, Captures Series

DUE WEST, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke baseball team succumbed to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to dropping a 10-9 contest in the twinbill opener, but the Braves rallied all the way back from an early 11-0 deficit in the nightcap to post a 15-11 victory and take its weekend series at Erskine on Saturday.
 
The Black & Gold (8-5, 5-1 CC) improved to 5-3 in Due West with Saturday's doubleheader split, and have captured five of the last seven series matchups with the Flying Fleet as well. The setback in Saturday's nightcap marked the third loss in the last four outings for Erskine (9-7, 2-4) who toppled top-ranked and defending national champion Wingate on Tuesday.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 5 The Braves loaded the bases with their first four at-bats in the inning, and Spencer Faulkner cut into a 3-run deficit with a two-run double to the gap in right field. Ethan Ott followed with a two-run single to put the Braves out in front, 9-8.
BOT 6 Kane Fisher tripled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and the Flying Fleet knotted the game back up moments later on a single through the left side off of the bat of Ashby Smith.
BOT 7 Leadoff hitter Armando Becerra hammered Chase Jernigan's second offering of the contest over the fence in right field to give the hosts the walk-off win.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 Erskine sent 13 batters to the plate in an 11-run inning, and highlighted the frame with nine hits, including five of the extra-base variety.
TOP 3 The Braves countered in the next half-inning, sending 14 batters to the plate in a 9-run frame. UNCP collected four free passes in the inning and tacked up six hits, including a grand slam by Ethan Ott.
TOP 4 UNCP recorded four hits and scored four more times in the top of the fourth. Christian Jayne got the party started with a one-out triple, while Trent Harris, Wellington Guzman and Blake Hinson all came through with RBI knocks.
