Wrestling Falls Just Short In Bid For Second NCAA Region Title

PEMBROKE – All-American Nick Daggett (125 pounds) and newcomer Zach Shaffer (285) completed unblemished runs through their respective tournaments en route to climbing to the top of the podium, but the UNC Pembroke wrestling team finished just short in their bid for a second NCAA Super Regional title on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The Braves finished the event with eight place-winners in all. Rahsaan Vereen finished the day in the runner-up position at the conclusion of the 165-pound tournament, as did Bryce Walker in the 197-pound championship. Jake Piccirilli (149 pounds) and Jovaun Johnson (184) finished in third place, while Shylik Scriven (174) and Cliff Owens (157) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

UNCP amassed 104.5 points across the 12-hour event on Saturday and finished 26 points behind region champ Newberry. Lander, Belmont Abbey and Limestone rounded out the top 5 among the 10 participating teams.
 
The top-3 place-winners for the Braves – Daggett, Johnson, Piccirilli, Shaffer, Vereen and Walker – will now advance through to the NCAA Division II Championships which will be held March 11-12 inside Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Mo. It will be the fourth trip to nationals for Daggett and the second trip for Walker, while the four others will make their first appearance on the sport's biggest stage.
 
The six national qualifiers is tied for the third-most in the history of the program, but it is the sixth-straight season that the Black & Gold will be represented by multiple student-athletes at the NCAA Championships event.
