Dominant Second Half Pushes No. 6 Men’s Basketball Past King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The 6th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team offset a small halftime deficit with hot shooting and a swarming defense in the second half as the Braves rallied back to tame upset-minded King, 87-68, on Friday evening inside KU's Student Center Complex.

The result marked the 15th consecutive win for the Braves (19-1, 16-1 CC) who have now also strung together eight-straight road triumphs as well. The setback marked the second-straight loss for the Tornado (10-10, 7-9) who suffered just their second home loss of the season, and their first in nearly two months.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Despite a resounding advantage on the glass, the Braves wrestled with cold shooting for much of the opening stanza and King jumped on the opportunity on the way to toting a 42-39 lead into the locker rooms. The visitors used a driving layup from Nate Dunlop to forge an 18-13 lead at the 11:43 mark, but the Tornado tacked up nine of the next 12 points to take a 22-21 lead five minutes later. A pair of free throws from Darron Howard with just under six minutes left before the intermission marked the first of seven-straight points by the hosts that gave them the lead for the remainder of the half.
2ND HALF
UNCP converted on 58.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half, while also showcasing a swarming defensive effort that limited King to just 27.3-percent shooting from the floor. Tyrell Kirk's transition dunk with 15:15 to play ignited the Braves on a game-changing 19-6 run that spanned nearly eight minutes and eventually gave the Black & Gold a double-digit lead at the 7:31 mark. The visitors closed the evening with a 14-4 run to provide the final.
