No. 11 Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short At No. 5 Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team canned an impressive six 3-pointers in the opening half en route to taking a slim lead into the halftime break, but fifth-ranked and top-seeded Augusta shot better than 50 percent from the field and went 18-for-24 from the free throw line in the second half to key an 82-76 win over the Braves in the semifinal round of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Sunday evening.

The loss put the wraps on an historic season for the Braves (27-4) who edged the 1990-91 squad (27-5) for the best record in school history with respect to winning percentage. Augusta (30-3) advances through to Tuesday's championship game where it will face second-seeded Queens (30-3).

The Black & Gold responded, however, with a 14-5 run over the next 4-1/2 minutes to knot the game up. Tyrell Kirk's 3-pointer with 59 seconds left gave the game its 11th tie score, but Augusta tacked up the next six points of the contest to pull away for good.
