Baseball Sweeps Series-Opening Twinbill At King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The UNC Pembroke baseball team erupted for 21 hits, scored multiple runs in four different frames and got a pair of shutdown relief performances to key a series-opening Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep at King on Monday. The Braves scored two runs in the top of the eight to take the first game, 7-5, and capitalized on four errors to grab a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

The results marked the 11th and 12th wins in the last 15 outings for the Braves (15-6, 7-1 CC) who clinched their fifth series victory of the season as well. The Tornado (9-8, 6-4) have now dropped four-straight contests.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 King erased a 3-0 deficit by plating four runs with two outs showing on the scoreboard. Junior Renwick hit a RBI single to provide the first run for the hosts and, after an ill-timed error kept the inning alive moments later, the Tornado chipped away at the lead again via a RBI single from Ethan Hawkins. A 2-run double off of the bat of Zachary Thomas put the hosts in front.
TOP 6 Wellington Guzman hit a one-out double to start something for the Braves, and Garrett Littleton followed with a run-scoring single to cut UNCP's deficit back to a lone score. Spencer Faulkner's RBI groundout later in the frame knotted the game back up at five runs apiece.
TOP 8 Trent Harris drew a 10-pitch walk to start the eighth inning, and Wellington Guzman crushed an 0-and-2 offering from Nic Blankenship down the left field line to put the Braves out in front for good.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 UNCP needed just two at-bats to take the lead for good as Spencer Faulkner singled, stole second base and scored on a RBI single from Ethan Ott. The Braves loaded the bases with their next two at-bats to set the table for a 2-run single from Andrew Mills that capped the scoring in the frame.
