Mount Olive Clips No. 19 Baseball In Extra Innings

WILSON – Fourth-seeded Mount Olive drew a pair of bases-loaded walks in the top of the 11th inning and fought off a slew of scoring opportunities by the 19th-ranked and second-seeded UNC Pembroke baseball team to turn back the Braves, 5-3, in extra innings in an elimination contest at the 2022 Conference Carolinas Tournament on Sunday.
 
The setback stopped a two-game win streak for the Braves (38-15) who were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and stranded 13 runners on the base paths. The Trojans (34-19) advance to Sunday evening's tournament championship game where they will lock horns with top-seeded North Greenville.
 
Senior southpaw Landen Smith (3-3) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts in 5-2/3 innings of relief, but still took the loss for the Black & Gold. Justin Koehler (7-2) notched the win for Mount Olive with 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 9 The Braves used a one-out single, a walk and an ill-timed wild pitch to put a pair of runners into scoring position, but UMO reliever Justin Koehler followed with a 7-pitch strikeout, and then induced an inning-ending fly out to escape the jam.
TOP 11 Mount Olive loaded the bases with its first four at-bats to set up a prime scoring opportunity. Dylan Benton drew a 5-pitch walk to force in the go-ahead run, and Jack Casbarro drew a walk with two outs to tack up an insurance run.
